What Is Keyword Research?
Keyword research consists of people using keywords to find and to research the actual search terms that people are entering into search engines. Your knowledge about how these actual search terms can help to inform your content strategy or your overall marketing strategy. I will be outlining a keyword research process that you can easily follow. This will help you to come up with and then narrow down a list of terms that you should be targeting. That way, it will enable you to establish and implement a strong keyword strategy that will help you to get found for the search terms that you actually care about.
How to Research Keywords for Your SEO Strategy – 6 Steps
1. Make A List And Rank The Important And Relevant Topics
This will be based on what you currently know about your business. To start this process, think about the specific topics that you want to rank for in terms of generic categories. You will need to come up with about 5-10 topic categories that you think are important to your business. And then you will use those topic buckets that will help you to come up with some specific keywords later in the process.
If you’re a regular blogger, these are probably the topics you blog about most frequently. Or perhaps they are the topics that come up the most in your sales conversations. You need to put yourself in the shoes of your buyer personas. What types of topics will your target audience search for that you would want your business to get found for?
2. Fill In Your Topic Categories With Keywords
So, now that you have a few topic categories you want to target, it’s time to find and select some keywords that fall into those categories. These will be keyword phrases that you think are important to rank for in the SERPs (search engine results pages) because your target customer is more than likely running searches for those specific terms.
For example, if I used a topic category for Wealthy Affiliate — Wealthy Affiliate Review — I would brainstorm some keyword phrases that I think people would type in that are related to that topic. Those might include:
- Wealthy Affiliate getting started
- Wealthy Affiliate guide
- Wealthy Affiliate complaints
- Wealthy Affiliate real deal
- Wealthy Affiliate earning potential
And the list goes on. The point of this step isn’t just to come up with your final and last list of keyword phrases. You will just want to end up with a brainstorm of phrases you think your potential customers may use to search for content related to that specific topic category. You can narrow the lists down later in the process so you don’t have something too unmanageable.
Since all keywords are getting encrypted by Google every day, a smart way to come up with keyword ideas is to determine which keywords your website is already getting found for. To do this, you will need to use a website analytics tool like Google Analytics It will allow you to drill down into your website’s sources of traffic and filter through your organic search traffic category to identify the keywords people are using to get to your website.
3. Research Related Search Terms

4. Check For A Combination of Head Terms and Long-tail Keywords In Each Of Your Categories
If you don’t know the difference, here are the differences between head terms and long-tail keywords. Head Terms are keyword phrases that are typically shorter and more generic. They are generally just one to three words in length. Long-tail Keywords, on the contrary, are longer keyword phrases that usually contain three or more words.
It’s important to be sure that you have a good mix of head terms and long-tail terms. It will give you a keyword strategy that is well-balanced with long-term goals and short-term successes. That’s because head terms are usually more frequently searched, often making them often much more competitive and harder to rank for than the long-tail terms.
Head terms will generally carry the most search volume which means it has the greater potential to send you traffic. However, the traffic you will get from a more specific long-tailed term will usually be more desirable.
For someone to be looking for something that specific, it is probably a much more qualified searcher for your particular product or service than someone looking for something really generic. And since long-tail keywords tend to be more specific, it is usually much easier to tell what people who are searching for those keywords are really looking for.
So, it is important to check your keyword lists to be sure you have a good mix of head terms and long-tail keywords. You will definitely want some quick victories that long-tail keywords will give you. But you should also try to chip away at the tougher head terms for the long term.
5. Identify How Your Competitors Are Ranking For These Keywords
Just because one of your competitors is doing something doesn’t mean that you need to do the same thing. This also applies to keywords. Just because a keyword may be important to your competitor, doesn’t mean that it is also important to you. However, if you understand what keywords your competitors are attempting to rank for, it will be an excellent way to help you give your list of keywords another assessment.
If one of your competitors is ranking for certain keywords that are also on your list, it will definitely make sense to work on improving your ranking for those same keywords. However, remember not to ignore the ones that your competitors don’t seem to care about. It could be a great opportunity for you to retain market share on important terms, as well.
It is important to know which balance of terms might be a little more difficult due to competition as compared to those terms that are a little more realistic. This will help you to preserve a comparable balance that the mix of long-tail and head terms allows. Remember, your goal is to end up with a list of keywords that not only provide some quick victories, but also will help you make progress toward bigger and more challenging SEO goals.
